Internationally renowned, Korean potter, Lee Kang Hyo visited West Virginia in 2004 as the visiting artist for the West Virginia Potters’ Gathering and in 2006 for the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana. During his time in the US, Kang Hyo created several pieces which we have available in West Virginia.
Kang Hyo has mastered the art of melding the traditional form of the onggi jar with the beauty of the Punch’ong design. His controlled freedom with the medium projects the morning calm of his homeland and the powerful energy of his spirit.
In the artist’s statement from the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation, Kang Hyo states: “A winter mountain is relaxing for me and for the trees. I lose myself in the surrounding stillness with the trees. So far, I have been living quite a hectic life. The trees have also been busy sprouting and bearing fruit through the spring, summer, and autumn. However, they have not rushed toward a deadline. Nor have they been pretentious or intent on achieving something. Beneath the ground, the roots have steadily provided water and nutrients to the part above ground.”
Lee Kang Hyo has shown his work extensively in international exhibitions and museums, as well as, numerous solo exhibitions including:
